On the road

That was it. I closed the book, talked to a friend about it, threw a few things into a backpack, and we bought a ticket for the first train leaving the station. It was around ’91 or ’92, and it’s an experience I’ll never forget. It was a book that marked entire generations, but nowadays, when everything is so certain and just a click away, that spirit seems to be gone. Until one day. Freedom and Fado.

I have such mixed feelings about On the Road. It needs a better review than I can do now, but the writing is better than the book. Dean Moriarty is a brilliant character.

Kerouac und das große, weite Amerika. Mcih packt die Sehnsucht, wenn ich nur daran denke. Ich weiß gar nicht, wie ich das Buch beschreiben soll. Kerouac schafft es, die Unrast, die wohl die Seele jedes jungen Menschen bewohnt, in Wörter zu fassen. Gehört eigentlich in einen Literaturkanon. Und sei es nur der eigene. Bitte auch dieses großartige Zitat beachten.
