Very interesting book, I learned a lot. Not convinced lessons from early societies are applicable to ours, except that at least they encourage us to "think out of the box". I would have liked to know what drove the choice of topics (chapters) in the book, and what other life areas could be contrasted with ours.
Too slow moving, very little character development, superficial information about the setting and individuals, naive and archaic understanding of what drives people's actions. Overall, a waste of good reading time. The TV series is much better.

This was a good read, and I have some trust that it does reflect the mentality of SS officers. Part of this mentality is the complete obscuring of the victims side, which is also an issue with this book, although part of its nature. I also learned more about the efforts by the Nazi regime to hide its crimes, and about the inter-war period in Germany and the SA-SS environment there.
