I've been a fan of Cory Doctorow when Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom pulled my attention with its colorful spine and name as a teen. That was in 2005/2006, when "You" were the Time Person of the Year, and web 2.0 was ramping up. I thought Down and Out matched that optimism, especially with the whuffles and the social credit thing, and the fact the ebook was free and downloadable for anyone, and there was a network of people who would do audiobook recordings for free -- but maybe that was the rose-colored lens from the times. When I reread it as an adult in the post covid-times when the promise of the internet was long broken, the story felt different. Pretty funny locked room mystery. Some may find the writing style kind of annoying, but I'm the type to find it charming instead. I will always open my heart to stories where the characters are "losers" but in interesting ways. Ryuhei and his ex-brother-in-law detective definitely fit that mold.

This was a cute book, enjoyed the blend of fantasy, vampires and locked room. I felt like I was reading a light novel with the illustrations and the writing. There seems to be a second novel on the way, so I'll definitely check it out.

I first heard of Chuck Wendig when he was a twitter dunk of the day for his "fuckcrustable" posting style, and mostly because he sued the Internet Archive. However, I read this for a local book club. The prose had tough-to-read gory moments that I had to pause for, and the writing drew some chuckles, but the overall story is a little bloated. There was a moment where I felt like I was reading the climax of the story, but actually had another 25% left.
