Stephanie Jane reviewed Flak by Jobie Baldwin (Tribe, #2)
Not ideal for me
3 stars
Having previously enjoyed the first book in Jobie Baldwin's 'Tribe' series, Ink, I eventually got around to this second novel. Unfortunately I wasn't as keen on it. I saw when looking at my previous review just before writing this one, that I had hoped for more worldbuilding as the series progressed. However, I think there was even less in Flak which was disappointing. The synopsis does say Flak is 'nonstop action ... and off-the-wall antics' but I felt that there were so many fight scenes that I lost the sense of what the overall war was about.
I did like how Baldwin depicted Ben's initial struggle with his inner god, Ta'xet, but I didn't feel I learned enough about that deity or about the power of his opposite number, Tia, to really understand what was going on. Overall Flak was an ok read, albeit too gung ho a one for …

I did like how Baldwin depicted Ben's initial struggle with his inner god, Ta'xet, but I didn't feel I learned enough about that deity or about the power of his opposite number, Tia, to really understand what was going on. Overall Flak was an ok read, albeit too gung ho a one for my tastes, but there were several moments where characters' motivations weren't clear so I couldn't fully believe in the scenarios as they were presented to me. While I think that action fantasy fans would get a lot more out of Flak than I did, I probably won't read any more from the Tribe series myself.
