Englannin maalaiskartanoiden tuhoutuminen on ihan oma genrensä. Tässä kirjassa leskeksi jäänyt kartanonisäntä ottaa uuden nuoren vaimon, ja tarina kerrotaan nuorikon näkökulmasta. Edellinen emäntä saattaa olla kuollut, mutta hän on jatkuvasti läsnä kaikessa ja hänen kuolemaansa tuntuu liittyvän yhtä jos toista salamyhkäistä. Genrensä edustajana ihan kelvollinen tarina, joskin rytmitys voisi olla toimivampikin — ensimmäinen puolisko on niin hidasta tahkoamista, että uuvutti lukea, ja jälkipuoliskossa sitten vyörytetään käänne toisensa jälkeen. Suomennos on hiukan aikansa elänyt ja paikoin vieraannuttava, mutta kaipa se tämän aikakauden tarinaan ihan sopii.

I liked the plot, though I think it is difficult to empathize fully with the first perspective protagonist nowadays. Still, she shows some growth throughout the story, that's something at least. I would have liked the book better if the language was not quite as flowery. Especially in the last 100 pages that should have been the most exciting, the slow slow buildup and the extreme descriptiveness lost to my impatience and I started skimming.

If you like a romantic setting and don't mind waiting for some sort of action to set in, you might enjoy the book, but for the most part, the pace was too slow for me.
