Magnesium reviewed Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett (Discworld (8))
Law and disorder
5 stars
All right, the Discworld universe is rather famous at this point. I don't think it's very useful to introduce the whole concept in this review. If it is, just type "Discworld Pratchett" in any search engine and you'll get more than enough to get an intro. Yes, it even works with Bing.
I didn't like what I read so far from Pratchett : "The Color of magic" and "Soul Music" if I remember well. It seemed convoluted and hard to understand the whole Discworkd universe. But lately, I realized that there was a logical order to the Discworld books and that some lovely fellows on the internet listed the order in which it makes sense to read them ! Obviously you could follow the publication order but some later books were also good introductions. "Guards ! Guards !" is one of them.
If you've never read Discworld stories or didn't like the very first one "The Color of magic", this one is an excellent start : the writing is still convoluted but I found it hilarious this time, the characters are all lovable, even the meanies, and there is just the right bits of suspense at the right moments !
This is basically the story of some poor night city guards trying to do their job when faced with inexplicable phenomenoms in a lawless city, the definition of "doing your job" varying wildly from one guard to the other.
I definitely had a good time, and again, if you didn't like the Discworld stories so far, give this one a chance !
