My 8yo brought Witch Boy home from the school library and couldn't put it down. Neither could his older brother, my reluctant reader. Both boys insisted I had to read it, and they were absolutely right. It's exciting, fresh, fun, and deep, and welcoming to young readers, everything I could ask for in a middle grade graphic novel. This book has all the qualities I treasure most: kickass heroines, epic battle scenes, vividly disturbing ghosts, compassion across dividing lines of all kinds, and a sense of humor. If Buffy the Vampire Slayer had been an apprentice exorcist in 1800s Chinatown...

It's every bit as complex, deeply researched, and culturally sensitive as all the other rave reviews say. It's also tremendous fun.
