Recommended by my devout older sister, this book differs from the rest of Zola's production in being very romantic, in keeping with his main character. Taken to the first degree, this is probably a good book for those passionate about religion, those who believe in ideal love and are transported by tragic destinies.

This is a precursor to the now popular "zombie apocalypse" books, describing the various reactions of a population to the spread of the plague. Reminiscent as well of Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez. As always, uses a good device to discuss the hidden dynamics of society laid bare by a catastrophe.
