I went back and forth in the course of reading this book about its quality, and there were times when it tipped too far toward pulp romance, but the level of detail in the alternate-history cultural inventions is terribly engaging in the end. After enjoying Carey's alternate-history spins on Renaissance Provence, Roman Britain, and early-medieval Scandinavia, I will probably read her next doorstop just to find out what she does next.
