Review of 'Enclave' on 'Goodreads'
4 stars
3.5 stars, really. Here I shall take a moment to lament that Goodreads doesn't use half-stars. I wish it did.
Enclave is part of the new tradition of YA fiction set in a dystopian future, with a female heroine. Our protagonist who tells the story from first person view is Deuce, a young huntress of her underground enclave in the tunnels beneath what was once New York. The people in the Enclave are separated into three castes: Hunters who hunt and protect, Crafters who make thinks and Breeders who procreate to keep the population going. All's not well in the Enclave, and the Elders who lead it seem to have their own agenda that's not always in the best interest of people. There's a silent revolution going on, a silent opposition, and Deuce's partner, the mysterious outsider Fade, is part of it.

I liked that part of the book a lot. Unfortunately the story moves on from there, and instead of the interesting dissolution of society we come to what feels like a playthrough of Fallout 3, on the surface. Just with less radiation and more zombies.
Deuce's stance towards breeding and the apparently standard love triangle that YA fiction requires left me a bit meh. The ending was very abrupt, but I guess I'll be kept stringing along. I am interested enough that I want to know how it continues. It's not as good as Hunger Games or Divergent, but it was entertaining enough.
