Best book I've read in 2018 so far. The world building is perfect and purposeful. The story is so enriching. At its heart, it is both stunningly and unsurprisingly a story of friends and family and an implacable enemy.

I'm blown away.

Thank you for writing this! :-)

This is an incredible book and likely among the best I've read this year. I strongly recommend The Broken Earth trilogy as the best that N.K. Jemisin has to offer thus far. Not only does it have an engaging plot, interesting narrative style, amazing setting, and intriguing characters, it also delves into deeper themes that are timeless and relevant for everyone. How do we protect those weaker than us while striving for advancement? How do we deal with our fear of those different from us? How do we respond to those that hate us? What does it mean to be part of a family? What does it mean to be human? This and so much more makes The Broken Earth trilogy a masterpiece of modern science fiction and fantasy.

It is easy to see why this novel was the 2016 Hugo Award winner. The story is just incredible, with plot, setting, and characters all being creative and engaging. It's the sort of story that leaves you wondering what do you want to be and do with life. And then confronts you with what to do when you realize you can't be what you want, but must instead struggle to survive.

The story is exactly the kind of thing I like, though I would prefer less crapsack. Every few hundred years there's a natural disaster and the world goes all mad max. And the people who can do earth magic are slaves, basically.

The thing keeping me from giving 5 stars is that I hated the narration style in the second person chapters.
