N. K. Jemisin: Emergency Skin (EBook, Amazon Original Stories)

What will become of our self-destructed planet? The answer shatters all expectations in this subversive …

Some of them will decide that they also want to be beautiful and free, like you. Some will fight for this, if they must. Sometimes that's all it takes to save a world, you see. A new vision. A new way of thinking, appearing at just the right time.

But the thing is, they don't see us. So, in using their eyes, not only do we unsee ourselves, but we also stop existing even for ourselves, which is such a cruel thing. What kind of looped violence? Fuck their eyes, may they bleed out of their heads. We deserve so much better, my love. I hope we find it all, and more. I can't wait to see what you turn into.

Way too confused. Don't trust the stars.

I mean, I love them and I was waiting for this book soooo much.

But it ends up being letters to family and friends in which they discuss many personal things. Things we already know because they inevitably became part of their previous books already.

On top of that, we sadly get to know more of them. A darker side in my opinion. One that is so attached to money and capital and possessiveness of all sorts.

It made me feel very uncomfortable sometimes. Especially given this is a book covered in magic written by a god.

I would say read anything else from Emezi but this.

The Will To Change

There's a lot here that I have direct experience with or is adjacent to my experiences, and the cutting descriptions help crystallise my thoughts on masculinities and the issues around them, and how it relates to feminism. Well worth reading, particularly if you're struggling with your own masculinity. Sometimes it felt a little vague or hopeful without focus, which is probably useful for some people, but seemed a distraction to me.

Mask Off

A practical and honest book covering personal experiences but also speaking more widely about UK and more global masculinities. Overall a warming book. It's heartening to see records of similar experiences among men written about in such an open way. Well worth reading.
