Thought provoking and unique take on the first contact trope

4 stars

Roadside Picnic is one of the most unique books of science fiction I have read. A first contact story where we don’t get whats going on, things happen too quickly, and the aliens leave without further to do, and the world keeps spinning.

The only trace of their Visit is some areas known as The Zones, where strange phenomena and dangerous traps can ben found at every corner, as well as strange objects and alien technology beyond human understanding, that lies there for whoever is willing to take it.

Those who venture inside the Zone to scavenge those goods are known as stalkers. The artifacts they find they then sell to whoever is willing to pay, making it a lucrative, if dangerous job. Of course, the government is trying to investigate and find a use for those objects as well, so being a stalker is very much illegal.

In this …

Atmosphärische Dystopie

5 stars

Becoming Number One

4 stars

I loved seeing how Chris Pike and Una Chin-Riley meet and become friends. The problems she's facing during her time at the academy, the guilt she carries, and how that catches up on her during the Enterprise's current mission is all wonderfully woven together. I loved seeing some of the SNW crew as well, especially one member was fun as always. More of them please! The new species we meet and its history and situation are very interesting and I liked everything about it. Very current, very important. Una McCormack does, once again, not disappoint. Could she ever?! As always, I recommend her interview about this book on the Literary Treks podcast. Edit: And here‘s her interview with Positively Trek.

Household tasks are morally neutral

4 stars

I've been struggling with household tasks and cleaning up my whole life. Of course I've been feeling very bad about it. No matter what I had tried before, I would fail over and over in getting up and keeping up. Reading this book gave me a new perspective on the whole thing. I have to read this book again though, and then go at it.

The chapters are short and there's a guide to skip chapters if you wish to go through it quicker.

If this is something you've been struggling with, I'd recommend you reading this. I can't say if it's going to change my life yet, as I have not started to follow anything from that book yet. But a change in perspective is a great first step no matter what.

Elliot Page: Pageboy (2023, Flatiron Books) 4 stars

Difficult read but very moving

4 stars

It's a very tough read/listen in places because unfortunately, Elliot Page had to deal with a lot of emotional abuse as a kid/teen and queerphobia later on. It was truly shocking to me to hear about the attitudes in Hollywood not that long ago. The book conveys the struggles and the difficult journey of trans persons really well, in an almost tangible way. In the end, I found myself cheering along when Elliot finally gets his top surgery. On a sidenote, I also learned a lot about Canada and Canadian history.

Tijan Sila: Radio Sarajevo (AudiobookFormat, German language, 2023) 4 stars

a book I won't forget very soon

4 stars

the writing is fantastic. also there is more... story than in parable of the sower, definitely more things happening and also more hope. somebody (I forgot the source) wrote about this "parable of the sower is about problems, while parable of the talents is about solutions" and yeah, this seems true. it is also still about horrible, horrible problems. some of these chapters were really hard to get through.

also everything seems so realistic - the characters and the choices they have to face, but also the USA/world politics.

the earthseed verses feel so much on point by now. they're definitely the thing I will remember most. as religions go, it's a good one.

EDIT: I wanted to add, if you want to read this book, check out the Octavia's Parables podcast by adrienne maree brown and Toshi Reagon. It is worth it for the songs from the opera "parable …

Jaw-droppingly prescient

5 stars

Jaw-droppingly prescient for a novel written 25 years ago. "Hunting for scapegoats is always popular in times of serious trouble," notes Butler in an interview in the afterword of this edition. "So is hunting for the great leader who will restore prosperity and stability... He turns his true believers - his thugs - loose on those he chooses as scapegoats and he looks around for an external enemy to use as an even bigger scapegoat and a diversion from the reality that he doesn't really know what to do. Because of him, innocent people lose their freedom, lose custody of their children, lose their lives."

Book of the moment

5 stars

I read this in April and have been thinking about it often since then. It helped me predict the outcome of the US elections and understand a lot of what goes on politically around the world.

The novel has its flaws but it does two things really well: show how people tend to react in the face of fundamental change such as climate change (mostly by denial and hoping for a return of the good old times) and drive home the point that there is no neutral ground in a burning world. I also found the reflections about change very compelling and think that if people followed them, i.e. accepted and shaped change, we would probably all be better off. The two main flaws of the book for me were the relentless grimness which I couldn't take quite seriously all the time - less would have been more in this …
