Ich war sehr underwhelmed von dem Buch. Meiner Ansicht nach lohnen sich Einleitung, Kapitel 1, Kapitel 9 und eventuell Kapitel 11. Über weite Strecken wird dem Hass und den Kleinkriegen der deutschsprachigen Twitteria zu viel Raum gegeben.

Ich hate-lese jetzt nur noch. Mir fehlt all das, was über den Status Quo hinausweist. Mit fehlt das Visionäre. Mir fehlt die emotionale Distanz. Ja, mich regt der Bullshit der rechten Agitator*innen auch auf. Aber den dann als Aufreger reproduzieren, sorry, das kann doch keine Lösung sein.
Also dann. Kapitel 7: Ein wenig Mediendigest und Erläuterung an Beispielen, wie widerlich der deutsche Mediendiskurs aktuell ist. Kapitel 8: "Cancel Culture" erklärt für Menschen, die immer noch nicht gecheckt haben, dass Taten Konsequenzen haben. Kapitel 9: Das Problem mit der Anrede, mit Pronomen und allem, was dranhängt. Endlich mal wieder ein gutes Kapitel mit mehr "Fleisch" dran als nur einer Aufarbeitung des mainstream(sozial)medialen Geschehens der letzten Jahre. Kapitel 10 ist ähnlich unvollständig. Als Korrekturleserin einer gewissen Magistraarbeit fehlt mir hier der das Infragestellen europäischer archäologischer Befunde, aber das ist schon eine sehr spezielle Anmerkung, sehe ich ein. Ich verstehe ja, dass ein Buch mit Kapiteln gefüllt werden möchte, aber mir fehlt das Verständnis für so viel Reproduktion von Stuss, wo der Titel so viel Positives impliziert. Kapitel 6 habe ich dann wieder gelesen. Erst geht's ganz viel um das Aufwachsen in den 90ern und 00ern, dann um Repräsentation in den Medien. Meiner Ansicht nach zeichnet dier Autorin ein unvollständiges Bild anhand (vll. unbewusst) selektierter Quellen. Es wird kritisiert, dass es an nichtbinären und trans Identitäten in den Medien fehle, die nicht um diesen Aspekt kreisen. Elliot Page wird erwähnt, aber seine Rolle in "The Umbrella Academy", wo genau das der Fall ist, wo genau nicht die Geschlechtsidentität …

Kapitel 3 konnte ich kaum lesen, die aktuellen "Debatten", die eigentlich nur Hetze gegen nb und trans Personen sind, brauche ich nicht nochmal im Detail vorgeführt bekommen.
Vorwort und Kapitel 1 sind ein netter Rundumschlag, aber nichts Neues für mich dabei. Kapitel 2, das Biologismus behandelt, ist an einigen Stellen unnötig polemisch und redundant. Das Thema Androzentrismus hätte ich lieber in einem eigenen Kapitel gesehen und mehr Argumente gegen forced gender binary gelesen - aber vielleicht kommt das ja noch.

When i started reading this novella, I falsely assumed it was part of the Wayfarers cycle. It's not, but it's also not important.
The book recounts the journey of four astronauts from earth. It tells of their struggles and joys, their passions and woes. I thoroughly enjoyed the way the story unfolds, the characters are painted and the way they are interacting with each other. And, without spoiling it, I really loved how the author decided to end the book.
I finished the book two days ago. I am still enchanted.

As with every book by Becky Chambers that I have read, I struggled in the beginning. The pacing is different in each of her books, the characters have loose links to past storylines at best, and I always need time to ease myself into the new perspectives that slowly develop.
But this book! Yes, it starts slow. But when the story finally takes off, when things start to converge, the payoff is well worth it.
I was smitten with the worldbuilding that was even more intricate and well thought-out than in previous books of the series. I loved the characters, the way they explore facets of the society they inhabit. And in the end, I enjoyed the way the story develops.

Thoroughly enjoyed the worldbuilding and the story, but I felt like I had to do the work to relate to the characters. They both start off at points in their lives that are unique, interesting - and hard to wrap my head around. The author does a great job giving them distinct voices and letting them grow over time, but I just found them too far removed to really get into the book.
The secondary characters, however! I really loved reading about them from the perspectives of the protagonists, and as always, the interactions are wonderfully crafted.
